Strain Details:
Origin: Oak Ridge, Tennessee (five miles west of the Y12 National Nuclear Laboratory)
Habitat: Equine dung and enriched soils
Climate: Subtropical
Cap: 25-75 mm in diameter, starting hemispheric to convex, expanding to broadly convex to nearly plane with age. The cap is dark red maturing to golden brown, with fine fibrillose veil remnants that soon disappear. Flesh is white soon bruising bluish green.
Stem: 150-200+ mm in length, typically equal or slightly enlarged at base. The stem is yellowish to buff with a reflective sheen, bruising bluish and hollow. The stem retains a persistent membranous annulus that is dusted with purplish brown spores.
Gills: Attachment adnate to adnexed. Gills are initially grayish becoming nearly black as they mature.
Spores: Dark purplish brown, subellipsoid, measuring 13 by 8 micrometers on 4-spored basidia.
